Behind Every Masterpiece:
Salute to the Art World's Unseen MVPs!
On a recent visit to the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C. the art was not the only part of the experience that left its mark. During the final round through a both inspiring and wildly creative exhibit for OSGEMEOS: Endless Story, my wife and I [Lorenzo] would end up striking up conversation with one of the Hirshhorn’s Customer Experience team members.
This gentleman was very welcoming of the dialogue and our questions about the various aspects of the exhibit itself. You know, typical stuff people think but don’t want to feel awkward asking. Like how long will the exhibit stay here? Was the artist here on site for the installation? How in the world did all this stuff get into this building? And on and on.
Forgive me as I’m sometimes horrible with names but I never forget a face. To all those people out there who have potentially crossed paths with me, I know you, just might not recall your name. This kind soul was not only welcoming of our questions, but he was also just as excited to share as we were to listen.
He gave some insight into the many layers of teams behind the scenes at the museum. From those working on administrative and legal aspects, to the conservation team helping to ensure the art stays in pristine [if not better] condition, and even the logistics and staging teams that work tirelessly to manage all the shipments/receiving/unpacking.
This gave me not only a new perspective about the arts but a strong appreciation to the many folks behind the scenes we may never know or get to see. This is our salute to you and kind thank you for the dedication and important parts you all play in not only facilitating arts experiences but literally bringing to life the magic. To anyone that has ever worked in a gallery, held roles with brokerages, provided art history or perspective, and especially those who are usually not public facing in their positions….
The Family Business says a very heartfelt and big “Thank You”
